Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu new year, and the whole island stops for a day. From 6AM until 6AM the next morning there is no traffic, no flights and no going out; lights are kept low and the streets are silent. In 2027, Nyepi (the Saka new year 1949) falls on Monday 8 March, according to Indonesia's official national holiday list.

What Nyepi is

Nyepi means a day of silence, reflection and self-restraint. It is observed through four restraints, the Catur Brata Penyepian: amati geni (no fire or light), amati karya (no work), amati lelungan (no travelling) and amati lelanguan (no entertainment or revelry).

Although Nyepi is a Hindu holy day, everyone on the island, including visitors, is expected to follow the restrictions.

Before Nyepi: Melasti on Sanur beach

A few days before Nyepi, village processions carry sacred temple objects to the sea for the Melasti purification ceremony. Sanur's beach is one of the places where you can see it: long lines of worshippers dressed in white, offerings and music.

Watch from a respectful distance, do not walk through a procession, and keep the beach path clear.

The night before: the ogoh-ogoh parades

On the evening before Nyepi, neighbourhoods across Sanur and Denpasar parade ogoh-ogoh: large, often fearsome effigies built by local youth groups, carried through the streets with gamelan, torches and a lot of noise to drive away negative forces.

It is lively and spectacular, but roads close for the parades. Plan to be back at your accommodation early, and ask your hotel where the nearest parade route is.

On the day: what visitors must do

Stay inside your hotel or villa for the full 24 hours. Beaches and streets are closed to everyone, the airport does not operate, and traditional village security, the pecalang, patrol to make sure the rules are kept. Only emergency services are exempt.

Hotels carry on quietly for their guests, usually with reduced lighting at night. Breaches are taken seriously by the authorities.

The day after: Ngembak Geni

The day after Nyepi is Ngembak Geni, literally relighting the fire. Families and friends visit each other, ask for forgiveness and start the new year together, and normal life resumes.

Planning tips

Shops close for the day, so buy snacks, water and anything you need the day before. Download films or books, charge your devices, and let anyone collecting you know that no flights operate on Nyepi. If the sky is clear, a Nyepi night is one of the darkest and most star-filled you will ever see in the south of Bali.

Spa time around Nyepi

Businesses across Bali close for Nyepi, and so do we. The days before are a lovely time for a massage before the quiet day. On the eve, roads can close early for the ogoh-ogoh parades, so book earlier in the day, and message us on WhatsApp to check our hours around Nyepi.

Dates and local arrangements follow official and village announcements each year. Check with your hotel for the latest details.
