What is an aromatherapy massage?

An aromatherapy massage is a massage given with scented plant oils chosen for how they smell as much as how they feel. The therapist uses smooth, steady, medium-pressure strokes, while the aroma rises around you. The goal is not to dig into knots, it is to slow you down: breathing deeper, softer shoulders, a quieter mind.

It is the most sensory of our massages. You choose a scent, you smell it from the first stroke, and you are rarely thinking about anything else by the end.

Aromatherapy Massage at Sari Day Spa, Sanur

Where aromatherapy comes from

People have used fragrant plants for as long as there has been writing about it: resins, flowers and oils in ancient Egypt, India, China and across Southeast Asia, for ceremony, bathing and healing. The word 'aromatherapy' itself is much younger. It is credited to the French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé, who used it as the title of a book in 1937, after the (famous but anecdotal) story that lavender oil helped heal a burn on his hand.

In Bali, fragrance is part of daily life: frangipani and jasmine in temple offerings, incense, flower baths and scented oils. An aromatherapy massage fits that setting naturally.

What happens in your session

At Sari Day Spa an aromatherapy massage goes like this:

  1. Choose your scentYou smell the four Sensatia Botanicals oil variants and choose the one you like. If you have allergies or sensitive skin, say so first.
  2. Settling inYour therapist begins with slow, light strokes on the back to spread the oil and let you breathe the scent in.
  3. Full-body massageUnhurried, medium-pressure massage works through the back, shoulders, arms, legs and feet. Pressure can go lighter or firmer on request.
  4. Slow finishThe pace slows towards the end so you finish calm, not stimulated.

The four scents

Our massage oils are Sensatia Botanicals, and each variant has its own mood:

Lemongrass & Mandarin

A bright, citrus-green blend. Lemongrass is a tall tropical grass grown across Southeast Asia, and mandarin is a sweet, sunny citrus peel oil. It reads as fresh and uplifting, which makes it a natural pick for a morning or midday massage.

Seaside Citrus

Built around grapefruit peel, which Sensatia describes as having natural cleansing properties. Clean, sharp and zesty, it suits guests who dislike heavy floral scents or who want to feel awake afterwards.

Relaxation

Lavender, chamomile and geranium: the classic calming trio. Lavender and chamomile are among the most familiar bedtime-style scents in the world, and geranium adds a soft, rosy green note. Choose this for an evening massage or when your mind is busier than your muscles.

Tropical Wildflower

Ylang ylang, geranium and jasmine sambac. Ylang ylang comes from the flowers of a tree native to Indonesia and the Philippines, and jasmine sambac is the white jasmine that is Indonesia's national flower. It is the most floral, warm and perfume-like of the four.

What the evidence actually says

It is fair to be sceptical about big claims. Research on aromatherapy is mixed: some studies suggest that scents such as lavender may help people feel less anxious and sleep better, but evidence for medical benefits is thin, and a lot of the research is small or low quality. What most people reliably report is simpler and more useful: a good-smelling oil and a calm room make a massage feel more relaxing.

So we do not promise that aromatherapy will cure anything. We promise a calm, scented, well-made massage, and if it helps you sleep better tonight, that is a bonus.

Who it suits, and when to book

Aromatherapy is ideal for first-time spa guests, couples, travellers working off jet lag, and anyone who finds firm pressure uncomfortable. It is also a good end-of-day treatment: beach, sightseeing, shower, then 60 or 90 minutes of scent and slow strokes before dinner.

If you are after a specific knot or chronic tightness, deep tissue is the better tool. If you want stretching and acupressure along with relaxation, try the Balinese massage. If you want the gentlest option, choose the Sari Signature Relaxing massage.

About Sensatia Botanicals

Sensatia Botanicals was founded in Bali in 2000 and is based in the island's Karangasem regency, where much of its workforce is from. The brand says its products are cruelty-free and made without parabens, sulfates, silicones, palm oil, synthetic dyes or artificial fragrance, that it shares profits with all employees, and that it runs a bottle-return programme for empties. Those are the company's own statements, as reported in 2025, and we have not independently audited them.

Made in Bali

Sensatia's products are made in Bali, and the brand is rooted in Karangasem on the island's east coast.

What it says it leaves out

Parabens, sulfates, silicones, palm oil, synthetic dyes and artificial fragrance, according to the brand's 2025 statements.

Why it matters to you

The oil goes onto your skin for an hour or more. Using a carefully made natural brand means the scent is plant-derived and the oil is designed to condition skin, not just provide glide.

Why choose Sari Day Spa

Aromatherapy costs the same as our other massages (IDR 245K for 60 minutes, IDR 345K for 90). We are a calm neighbourhood spa on Jalan Batur Sari, open daily 9AM–9PM, and you can book with a quick WhatsApp message. Tell your therapist about allergies, pregnancy or medical conditions before you start; massage here is for relaxation and is not a medical treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How much is an aromatherapy massage in Sanur?

At Sari Day Spa an aromatherapy massage is IDR 245K for 60 minutes and IDR 345K for 90 minutes.

What is the difference between aromatherapy and a normal massage?

The technique is a calm, flowing massage, and the scented oil is part of the treatment. A normal relaxation massage may use the same strokes but with less emphasis on the aroma.

Which scent should I choose?

Relaxation (lavender, chamomile, geranium) for evenings and unwinding, Lemongrass & Mandarin or Seaside Citrus for something fresh and uplifting, and Tropical Wildflower for a warm floral scent.

Is aromatherapy massage good for stress?

Many people find the combination of scent and slow massage calming. Scientific evidence for specific health effects is limited, so we describe it as a relaxation treatment rather than a medical one.

Is it gentle or firm?

It is usually medium and flowing, and the pressure is adjustable. For firm, targeted work, choose deep tissue.

Can I choose my oil?

Yes. Choose from the four Sensatia Botanicals variants when you arrive and tell your therapist about allergies or sensitive skin.
