What is a pedicure?

A pedicure is a cosmetic treatment for the feet and toenails. It usually includes trimming and shaping the nails, caring for the skin of the feet, smoothing rough patches, and finishing with polish. The word comes from Latin: pedis (of the foot) and cura (care).

In Bali, with sandals, sand and sun, feet get a lot of wear. A pedicure takes care of the part of you that does the most work on a holiday.

A short history of pedicure

Foot and nail care is very old. Accounts of pedicure-style care in ancient Babylon, Egypt and China are widely repeated, often involving tools, oils and colour used to show rank, though the details are hard to verify. Today, pedicures are one of the most popular spa treatments in the world, in part because the effect on how feet look and feel is easy to see.

OPI or gel polish on your toes?

The same two options as a manicure:

OPI polish

Regular lacquer polish from OPI, a well-known professional nail brand. Dries in air, gives a classic glossy finish, and is easy to remove. Typically lasts several days to a week or so, depending on your hands.

Gel polish

Applied in thin layers and hardened under a UV or LED lamp, so it is dry and smudge-proof as soon as it comes out. A gel manicure typically lasts two to three weeks without chipping. Removal needs soaking, and dermatologists advise not overdoing gel because of repeated UV exposure and possible nail dryness or thinning.

Foot safety and who should check first

A pedicure is safe for most people, but feet deserve some care. If you have diabetes, circulation problems, reduced sensation, wounds, fungal infections or ingrown nails, tell us before booking and check with your doctor first, since health authorities advise extra caution with aggressive callus removal and soaking. Hygiene matters too: it is reasonable to ask us how tools and foot baths are cleaned. If you choose gel, look after your nails: keep cuticles moisturised, avoid peeling gel off, and ask us to soak it off properly. Dermatologists suggest limiting gel to occasional use and protecting hands from UV, so for a longer trip it can make sense to alternate gel and regular polish. Hygiene matters too: ask us anything about how tools are cleaned.

When to book a pedicure

After a few days of walking or beach time, before a wedding or event, or before a trip where you will wear sandals.
