What is a foot massage?

A foot massage is a hands-on treatment for your feet, and often the lower legs. The therapist uses oil, gliding strokes, kneading, thumb pressure and gentle joint movement across the soles, arches, heels, toes and ankles. The aim is plain and practical: relieve soreness, ease tension and make your feet feel light again.

It is one of the simplest ways to feel better in Bali. Walking on warm pavements and sand, sandals, scooters, long days of sightseeing and a lot of time on your feet all add up.

Foot Massage at Sari Day Spa, Sanur

Why feet need attention

Each foot has dozens of bones, joints, muscles and tendons, and together they carry your entire body weight all day. Feet work hard and are rarely looked after. A massage can help the muscles of the sole and calf let go, which is why many guests feel a surprising sense of relief that spreads up through the legs.

Foot massage has a long history across Asia, where foot care has been valued for centuries as both a pleasure and a way to unwind. In Indonesia, foot massage is a familiar everyday treat rather than a luxury.

What happens in your session

Your foot massage typically goes like this:

  1. Settling inYou sit or lie back comfortably and your therapist checks pressure and any foot or leg concerns.
  2. Warm-upOil is spread over the feet and lower legs with slow strokes.
  3. Soles, arches and heelsThumbs and knuckles work along the sole and arch, the tight band under the foot, and the heel.
  4. Toes, ankles and calvesEach toe is gently worked, the ankle is rotated, and the calf muscles are kneaded.
  5. Slow finishThe pressure eases and the session ends with calm strokes.

Foot massage or reflexology?

The two are often confused, so here is the difference:

Foot massage (this page)

Works on the tissue of the foot itself with gliding, kneading and pressure. Aim: comfort, relaxation and relief for tired feet.

Foot reflexology

Applies pressure to specific mapped points on the foot, based on the belief that they correspond to other parts of the body. The belief is traditional; scientific evidence for it is limited.

Who it suits, and when to book

Foot massage suits anyone who is on their feet a lot: travellers on a walking itinerary, people who wear sandals or heels, runners and surfers, and guests who just want a lighter treatment than a full-body massage. It is also a good add-on for guests with a bit of spare time before a flight or dinner.

Book it after a day of exploring, as a break in the afternoon, or on a day when you want something gentle. If you have diabetes, neuropathy, circulation issues, wounds or recent foot injuries, tell us before booking.

Pair it with something

Add a foot massage to a pedicure to refresh both the look and the feel of your feet, or follow a full-body massage with it as part of a longer visit. See our spa packages for combinations.

Your oil: Sensatia Botanicals

Every massage here uses Sensatia Botanicals, a natural skincare brand made in Bali. The oil does real work: it lets the therapist's hands glide without dragging the skin, and it leaves your skin conditioned afterwards. Our four oil variants are scented with essential oils, so what you smell is part of the treatment.

Lemongrass & Mandarin

A bright, citrus-green blend. Lemongrass is a tall tropical grass grown across Southeast Asia, and mandarin is a sweet, sunny citrus peel oil. It reads as fresh and uplifting, which makes it a natural pick for a morning or midday massage.

Seaside Citrus

Built around grapefruit peel, which Sensatia describes as having natural cleansing properties. Clean, sharp and zesty, it suits guests who dislike heavy floral scents or who want to feel awake afterwards.

Relaxation

Lavender, chamomile and geranium: the classic calming trio. Lavender and chamomile are among the most familiar bedtime-style scents in the world, and geranium adds a soft, rosy green note. Choose this for an evening massage or when your mind is busier than your muscles.

Tropical Wildflower

Ylang ylang, geranium and jasmine sambac. Ylang ylang comes from the flowers of a tree native to Indonesia and the Philippines, and jasmine sambac is the white jasmine that is Indonesia's national flower. It is the most floral, warm and perfume-like of the four.
