What is a creambath?
Creambath (also written cream bath) is an Indonesian hair and scalp treatment: your hair is shampooed, a conditioning cream or mask is worked through the hair and scalp, and a long, slow massage of the head, neck and shoulders follows while the cream does its work. Many salons add a warm towel or gentle steam to help the cream soften the hair.
If you have never heard of it, that is because it is mostly an Indonesian salon tradition. Indonesian health sources describe it as specific to Indonesia, and note that elsewhere a similar treatment is usually called a hair spa. The word itself is simply English: cream plus bath.
Why Indonesians love it
Indonesia has a long tradition of caring for hair with natural ingredients such as coconut oil, aloe vera and candlenut. The salon creambath is a modern, affordable version of that habit with one big extra: the massage. For many Indonesians it is a regular, inexpensive ritual that is as much about unwinding as hair condition. It is what you do when you want to feel looked after for an hour, and your hair happens to come out softer.
Creambath is also a good fit for tropical climates, where sun, humidity, salt water and chlorine all leave hair dry or frizzy.

- Rinse and finishEverything is rinsed out, and you can choose to finish with a regular or styled blow-dry.
Creambath, hair mask or hair spa?
The terms overlap, so here is how they usually differ:
Creambath
Light, regular care. Cream plus a scalp massage, mostly about scalp circulation, softness and relaxation. Suits normal to lightly dry hair.
Hair mask
A concentrated treatment, usually left on longer, aimed at dry, damaged or chemically treated hair. Typically used less often, and with less massage.
Hair spa
A broader label, often used outside Indonesia for a similar combination of scalp care, mask and massage.
Who it suits and when to get it
It suits almost any hair type. It is especially good if your hair feels dull and dry after sun and sea, if you carry stress in your neck and shoulders, or if you want a calm hour that is not a full-body massage. Many visitors book it for the day before a special event, or on a mid-trip rest day.
Local guidance suggests creambath roughly every one to two weeks for regular care, with longer gaps for very damaged hair. If you are visiting for a few weeks, once is a lovely treat. If you have a scalp condition or sensitive skin, tell your stylist first.
