What is a body mask?
A body mask is a spa treatment in which a nourishing mask is spread over the body and left on for a short time, then rinsed away. Think of a face mask for your whole body. It usually follows a scrub, because exfoliated skin takes up moisture and nutrients better, and ends with a shower and lotion.
At Sari Day Spa the body mask treatment includes a body scrub first, then the mask, then shower gel and body lotion, so it is the more complete of our two skin treatments.

Mask, wrap and scrub: what is the difference?
Spas use the words loosely. A scrub exfoliates. A mask or wrap is applied on top of the skin to hydrate or nourish. Traditional wraps may use clay, mud, seaweed or herbal pastes, and some wrap the body in warm towels or blankets so the product stays in contact with the skin. In many spas, the two are done together.
Mask and wrap ingredients vary widely, and so do the claims. Some spas advertise detox, slimming or cellulite benefits. Doctors say there is no real evidence that wraps remove toxins from the body or cause lasting weight loss, and that any change in how the skin looks comes from temporary hydration or plumping. We stick to what is honest: a mask hydrates and conditions the skin, and feels lovely.
Roots of the mask: Indonesian beauty rituals
Skin masks and pastes are part of Indonesian beauty traditions that go back centuries, including cooling rice-flour masks used in Kalimantan to keep skin moist and protect it from the sun, and the herbal pastes and steam baths used by Javanese and Banjar brides before weddings. The spa body mask is a modern treatment, but it comes from the same idea: care for the skin with plants and patience.
What happens in your session
Your 60-minute body mask treatment goes like this:
- ConsultationYour therapist asks about allergies, sensitive skin and sunburn.
- Body scrubA scrub is applied and worked over the body to exfoliate.
- ShowerYou rinse off in a private shower.
- Body maskThe mask is applied over the body and left for a short time to hydrate and nourish while you relax.
- Rinse and lotionYou rinse again with shower gel and finish with body lotion.
Who it suits and when to book it
A mask is ideal if your skin feels dry, tight or tired, for example after sun, salt, wind or air-conditioned travel. It is a good treatment before an event, or as a gentle, restful hour with no pressure on the muscles.
Avoid or ask first if you have sunburn, broken skin, rashes, allergies or very sensitive skin. If you take prescription medication, check with your doctor, since some ingredients can be absorbed through the skin. If tight wrapping makes you uncomfortable, let your therapist know.
